Tea, Cake & Coast Digital – 1940’s Big Brew Up Supporting SSAFA

,

At Coast Digital we hardly need an excuse for a cup of tea and a slice of cake but the opportunity to do both whilst raising money for a fantastic cause was simply too good to miss. The Big Brew Up is an annual event held globally by SSAFA Forces Help and is a great way to raise money and awareness for SSAFA, who support our armed forces’ serving personnel, veterans and their families.

The Big Brew Up had a decidedly 1940’s feel and many members of staff chose to don period military uniforms, frocks – we even had a land girl! The dressing up effort was equalled by the generosity of our Coasties, many of whom brought in home-cooked cakes and treats to be sold on the day and also some brilliant tombola prizes.

The Coast Digital offices were decked with bunting, bomb-blast tape on the windows, period posters and even newspapers from the time and with the abundance of cake, sweets, chocolate and tea it is fair to say that we could have welcomed an army, navy or air force, 1940’s or otherwise.

Throughout the day we welcomed guests from all walks of life, from the Lady Mayor of Colchester and Bob Mitchell, SSAFA’s Colchester Branch Treasurer, to friends and family, members of the public and those that simply saw the banners in passing and fancied dropping in for a quick brew and to learn about the vital work that SSAFA carry out. Even the local press attended with cameras in hand to capture the mood and snap those of us in costume; pictures from the Big Brew Up can be seen in today’s Colchester Gazette and on our Facebook page.

The Big Brew Up was hugely successful and to date we have raised over £500 for SSAFA Forces Help. We must thank all who attended, without you it simply would have not been the same and also thank everyone who donated on the day; although we’re not stopping there and you can still donate to SSAFA using our Just Giving account.
