About the brand
The challenge
As a digital agency that helps clients reduce their website emissions, it was only right that we held ourselves to the same standard. Our previous site, while functional, hadn’t specifically been built with sustainability in mind.
We set out to change that, focusing on cleaner code, better asset handling, and performance-led development to make our website more efficient and environmentally responsible.
What we did
We approached the redesign with a clear goal: lower our emissions without compromising on design or user experience. Working closely with our development team, we identified and addressed several key opportunities:
- Eliminated render-blocking resources to streamline initial page loads
- Reduced unused JavaScript and CSS, cutting down the load and execution time
- Converted imagery to next-gen formats and properly sized them to avoid excess bandwidth usage
- Switched animated images to video formats, a lighter and more efficient alternative
- Improved server response times (TTFB) for faster, more efficient content delivery
These changes were guided by performance audits and sustainability metrics, ensuring every update contributed to a lighter, faster, and more sustainable site.
The results
The improvements were significant:
- Average emissions per visitor dropped from 0.55 g to 0.45 g. A reduction of 18%
- Total annual CO₂ emissions fell by 69%, from 51.59 kg to just 27.50 kg
By focusing on both technical performance and sustainability best practices, we not only improved our website’s carbon footprint but also created a more performant and maintainable platform.
What’s next
Digital sustainability isn’t a one-off project; it’s an ongoing commitment. While these results mark a strong step in the right direction, there’s still more work to be done. Continuous monitoring, iterative improvements, and keeping pace with evolving web standards are all essential to maintaining a low-emission, high-performance website.
We’re committed to staying accountable and building on this progress, both for our business and in support of the wider web ecosystem.
